Mastering Your Emotional Brain

June 8, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

Emotions can be disorienting, detrimental, and downright challenging. One moment our life can be peaceful and easy, the next chaos! As we all have experienced, in the blink of an eye, everything can change.

Whether it be pandemics, political unrest, challenging transitions, the passing of loved ones, or a stuck emotional pattern, our Nervous System is taxed with the responsibility of helping us process what is happening in our life. If we are clear and connected, emotions can become a guiding compass for us understanding ourselves on a deeper level and thriving regardless of the circumstances around us.

Processing

We love seeing many of the people in our chiropractic practice, as their nervous system becomes healthier, find clarity through all sorts of life’s crazy challenges. Processing and learning from our emotions is a journey. As you continue to make decisions with your Ideal 100 Year Lifestyle in mind, it may be beneficial to consider the possibility that your emotions hold more value than you think, and the individual parts of your emotional brain are interconnected!

The Limbic System

Our emotional brain is essential for our body’s ability to process. It is called the “Limbic System.” It is a complex compilation of different nerve groupings. Each with a specialized function. Here is a quick guide to understanding the key aspects of your brain’s Limbic System:

Amygdala: This tiny almond-shaped structure is known for helping the Nervous System evaluate potential threats. It can trigger the “fight or flight” response. And is also responsible for conditional learning (based on reward or punishment).

Hippocampus: Memory formation and storage.

Thalamus: This is the “Amazon Prime” of the brain. The Thalamus delivers messages coming up from the body to the appropriate processing centers. It plays an essential role in connecting the rest of the Limbic System to other aspects of the Nervous System.

Hypothalamus: This is the key regulatory center. The Hypothalamus is constantly taking in physiologic messages. Such as breathing rate and metabolism. This is the part of your brain that triggers you into “hanger” when your blood sugar levels have dropped.

Cingulate Gyrus: Associates sights and smells with pleasant memories of previous emotions. It also plays a role in processing our conscious emotional experience.

Basal Ganglia: Think of this as the “dimmer switch” for the brain’s motor output. It’s capable of inhibiting certain behaviors such as talking out of turn.

Crucial Role

All of these parts of the Limbic System play a crucial role in directing our Nervous System. We want to respond with the appropriate “fight or flight” response should a big grizzly bear appear during a hike. Sometimes, it is necessary to use this adrenaline-boosting response. But not always. How often is our body stuck in this type of stress pattern when there is no emergency?

When there is interference to the Nervous System, its ability to respond appropriately is distorted. With this distorted signaling, our emotional response may become unregulated and downright dramatic. We may become overly aggressive or act out in a way we later regret. Maybe, we find ourselves in a recurrent emotional loop. And we replay the same pattern again and again.

A Clear Nervous System

When our Nervous System is clear and connected, it is much easier to step outside of the recurrent loop. With healthy decisions such as receiving Chiropractic Lifestyle Care, our brain and body have a leg up in processing emotions. When the Nervous System is balanced out, the brain and body can work together. They provide clarity and depth to the wisdom our emotions hold. Once we make healthy decisions and take responsibility for our emotions, we truly learn from them.

Perhaps most importantly, we need community. Reach out to family, friends, and other supportive roles in your life. By reaching out you are taking the first step towards forming a more healthy relationship with your emotions. Also known as vulnerability. This act of bravery goes a long way and can lead us to brilliant discoveries and experiences. When we make vulnerability a regular occurrence in our life, emotions become healthy opportunities to learn about ourselves and move through life challenges.

Create communities that support your 100 Year Lifestyle.

Booming Chiropractic Industry Celebrates 124th Birthday

September 17, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

The chiropractic profession is booming as it celebrates its 124th birthday. Both the care and the trust have become the first choice for millions of individuals, families and athletes of all ages who line up for care.

There are many reasons for this growth, including chiropractic’s timeless holistic principles, supportive research and patient satisfaction. Additional factors also include the eye-opening challenges of our aging population, pediatrics, athletic performance, concussions and a rapidly growing distrust of the status quo.

Let’s explore a few of these in more detail now.

A Healthy Spine and Nervous System is Essential. Period!

It is an indisputable scientific fact that a healthy spine and nervous system is essential for a healthy life. Through every phase of growth and development, and as you age, keeping your spine and nervous system healthy must be a priority.

Chiropractors work great independently or in conjunction with other allopathic providers when necessary, while prioritizing the health of their patients. With some of the lowest malpractice rates of any health care profession by far, this drugless profession has stood its ground against Big Pharma’s bullying and brainwashing, and the public is responding – even paying for their care out of pocket when necessary!

Begin with the End in Mind

People are living longer, but they are not living better. Nursing homes and assisted living centers are popping up like coffee shops on every corner and in every community. The current generation of seniors were blindsided by their extended life span. They had no idea they were going to live this long, meaning they didn’t prepare to ensure long, quality lives.

“If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.” This was their motto and they defined broke as excruciating pain or severe life-threatening conditions. With increasing life expectancy, this is no longer an acceptable approach! The burden on society and the younger generations is too great and the suffering, squandered wisdom and human potential is immeasurable.

We now have a generation of drug-addicted, neurologically damaged seniors and children who have blindly followed this allopathic, pharmaceutical driven model. People are rebelling by making different choices.

Chiropractors are filling the void, providing both proactive and reactive solutions to solve these problems. By keeping health care costs down and empowering people to function at higher levels, they are improving quality of life with a goal of 100:100, 100 percent for 100 years.

Styles and Specialties

Chiropractic works with the body’s innate intelligence, its inborn ability to adapt, heal and function properly. The profession has matured over the years with hundreds of different styles and specialties called techniques.

In the old days, people might say that they saw a chiropractor and it worked or didn’t work for them with the assumption that all chiropractors did the same thing. This is no longer true with gentle techniques for babies, children and fragile seniors to more traditional styles, instrument-based and extremity adjustments.

There’s a technique for everyone. Having a chiropractor and utilizing chiropractic care throughout one’s lifetime can speed healing and lead to a healthier life.

Chiropractors specialize in vertebral subluxation correction, pregnancy, pediatric and family care, Functional Neurology, concussion care, sports and performance-based care, generational care, disk injuries, accident recovery, nutrition, fitness and more.

Finding the techniques or specialty that works best for you and your family is important.

Frustrations with the Status Quo

The status quo in health care has let us down in so many ways. We have become a drug culture where pharmaceutical advertising has brainwashed us. They led us to believe that there is a pill for every ill. We believe that numbing pain to feel better now is the ticket to health.

Conflicts of interest between drug companies, politicians and policy have led to…

  • a neurological crisis in children
  • a longevity crisis with seniors
  • an opioid crisis
  • a superbug crisis
  • a chronic disease crisis
  • a medical error crisis (now third leading cause of death)
  • a medical cost crisis
  • an obesity crisis
  • …and this is only a few of them

Toxic food and water are unsafe. Untested vaccination schedules are being tolerated and mandated without efficacy. This contributes to these unhealthy trends. The Food and Drug Administration has dropped the ball as I’ve heard many patients state that the FDA should stand for Financing Drug Addiction for their role and lack of oversight on all of these issues.

Stephen Covey, bestselling author of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People said that “some people climb the ladder of success, get to the top and realize that the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall.”

We have an entire healthcare system with a ladder that is leaning against the wrong wall.

History

The first chiropractic adjustment was given in 1895 by a man named Daniel David Palmer to a partially deaf janitor named Harvey Lillard. Palmer noticed a vertebra out of alignment in Lillard’s back. Lillard explained that he had moved the wrong way, heard a pop, and then lost his hearing. Palmer had Lillard lie down on the floor and performed the adjustment. When Lillard saw Palmer again, he said he could hear once more, and he was no longer in pain. This experience led Palmer to open the first school of chiropractic two years later.

The younger generations are looking for a better way, and the common sense and care that chiropractors provide is providing hope, healing and a solid answer for the future.

The 100 Year Lifestyle Way

The 100 Year Lifestyle is all about living a healthy, passionate, prosperous life for 80, 90, 100 years and beyond. A healthy spine and nervous system so your body is able to adapt is an essential piece of the puzzle along with a long term vision, clean environment, quality relationships, life-long learning, healthy habits, exercise, good nutrition and safe, quality health care.

As the chiropractic industry celebrates its 124th birthday, consider how it might change your life. Once you begin to put yourself first and take care of your body BEFORE a crisis happens, only then will you be able to live your healthiest, happiest, and longest life.

Your 100 is coming; you make the call!

The Nerve of Skin

May 30, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and its first line of defense against external threats. The skin communicates with the brain via sensory receptors and plays a significant role in nervous system function. According to the American Physiology Society, “The peripheral nervous system plays a pivotal role in skin homeostasis and disease,” and “the central nervous system is directly or indirectly connected to skin function.” The sensory receptors in our skin receive messages from the external environment and quickly relay them to our brain for processing. Both our external and internal world have a huge impact on our skin.

When either of these systems are not working well, the skin will be affected. It is no wonder that people with nerve system imbalances see their skin conditions improve when they begin receiving chiropractic adjustments.

The skin can exhibit imbalances in various forms of sensitivities. According to a Mayo Clinic study, skin disorders are the number one reason people seek out healthcare professionals.

Because our skin is a vast protective organ, and intricately related to the nervous system, it’s important to consider its relationship to the sun. We’ve all heard that vitamin D is the “sunshine vitamin” and this is because when sunlight hits our skin, it is turned into vitamin D3 through a chemical process within our body.

According to Scientific American, “Getting a little sunshine is important for helping our bodies generate Vitamin D, an important supplement for strong bones, and for regulating our levels of serotonin and tryptamine, neurotransmitters that keep our moods and sleep/wake cycles in order.”

Wearing sunscreen has led to a decrease in vitamin D absorption for a majority of the population, reducing the sun’s positive effects. According to a study in the Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapeutics, “Wearing a sunscreen with a sun protection factor of 30 reduces vitamin D synthesis in the skin by more than 95%.”

It is important to allow yourself some sunscreen-free sun exposure daily. Of course, over-exposure to the sun can cause a sunburn, so be mindful when you are out in the sun for extended periods of time and consider the type of sunscreen you use.

According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting health and the environment, “The Food and Drug Administration has not reviewed evidence of potential hazards of sunscreen filters.” 84% of the 831 sunscreens tested by the EWG were found to contain harmful chemicals.

When searching for a sunscreen, EWG advises using a mineral sunscreen as a safe alternative and they provide an updated list each year of the safety ratings of every sunscreen. Go to ewg.org to see how yours rates and find a safe sunscreen for you and your family.

Adjust your lifestyle, sun exposure and keep your skin communicating with your nervous system. Regardless of the time of year, take a moment each day to absorb the nutrients the sunshine is providing!

Neuroplasticity and Nerve Regeneration

May 20, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

How many of us know someone who has been affected by a brain injury or a disease like Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, ALS, Alzheimer’s, or Dementia? Or how many of us wish we could just focus better, improve our brain power, and protect ourselves from neurodegenerative diseases? Science has long proclaimed that the human body could not regenerate nerves once they are lost or damaged. But, luckily for us Innate Intelligence finds a way to prove us wrong.

Doctors of Chiropractic have known for over 100 years that the Nervous System is able to regenerate. The new, hot scientific term for this age-old truth is neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. We have included many research links on this topic for you to explore. Adopting this mindset and embracing this reality is important to ensure your optimum health and quality of life now and as you age.

One of the most interesting things that came from these experiments is the relationship between spine function and neuroplasticity. It was found that “chiropractic care, adjusting the spine to restore spinal function, actually changes the way the brain functions*.” By allowing the nervous system to be free from inhibition we allow it to function at its highest capability which is to be self-healing and self-organizing.

Nutrition

There are nutritional ways to support neuroplasticity as well. Research on a mushroom family known as Hericium, specifically Lions Mane, has shown that this is actually very possible. Lions mane contains Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) which has the ability to stimulate new nerve growth, protect our nerves, and is a building block in brain health. Lions mane also helps the body to build up new myelin around the nerves which provides insulation and faster communication.

With the advent of more and more neurological diseases now is the best time to start taking proactive measures for your brain’s health.

A few More Researched Benefits:
1. Nootropic- boosting brain cognition and memory
2. Lowering “Bad Cholesterol” LDL
3. Raising “Good Cholesterol” HDL
4. Protects against Gastric Ulcers
5. Dissolves Amyloid Plaques in the brain- a leading cause of Alzheimer’s
6. Helps relieve Diabetic Neuropathy pain
7. Positively affect our Circadian Rhythms- our body’s internal clock.

Just like most things in life, this is not a quick fix. It will take a few weeks of continuous use to see the benefits. Adding this supplement to your routine along with Chiropractic lifestyle care can drastically improve the health of your brain and nervous system, ensuring you are living your 100 year lifestyle.

The Healing Power Within You

December 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

If you are in pain or suffering from a health problem, then the greatest gift you can receive is to discover and release the healing power within you. This healing power is the same vitalistic energy that grew you from one cell at the moment of conception to over 80 quadrillion cells that are perfectly placed, organized and orchestrated in you as an adult.

Chiropractic works with this innate healing power, your Innate Intelligence, to help you recover quickly from injuries and enjoy the quality lifestyle you deserve throughout your life.

How does this happen?

Your nervous system is the master control system of your body and healing energy flows over this network. With over 45 miles of nerves delivering over 3 million messages per second between your brain and every one of your cells, this pathway between your brain and body must be healthy for you to function properly. This pathway must also be clear for you to heal if you have been injured or you are sick.

Unfortunately, this communication pathway can experience interference. Nerve Interference that occurs in the spine is called a vertebral subluxation. Research out of the University of Colorado has shown that the weight of a dime can reduce nerve transmission.”Only five to ten millimeters of pressure can interfere with the nutrition of a nerve, starving it of nutrients,” reports the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics.”Deterioration can occur within two weeks,” according to Dr. Videman’s research out of Finland.

Lifestyle Interference results from poor health habits such as overeating, poor nutrition, excessive drinking, taking prescription or non-prescription drugs, or sitting too much. Environmental Interference can be caused by toxicity from air, food, water, or chemicals, as well as accidents or natural disasters. All three types of interference can cause pressure in your spine and nervous system and affect your health on every level.

Rather than releasing the healing power within them, too many people treat their symptoms with over the counter and prescription drugs while the underlying cause, the interference, remains in their system and accumulates damage for decades. This has short and long term consequences.

The great thing is that as long as you are alive and breathing, and there is life flowing over your nervous system, this healing power stays within you, just waiting for you to get the interference out of the way. When you do, it goes to work and does its job! With consistency, not only can your body heal to the point where you feel better, your health can stabilize and your body can also regenerate.

How many weeks have you or your loved ones spent where you are waiting, hoping and praying for health problems to go away.

Everyone deserves to be healthy and express their full potential from the time they are born through their last breath of life. This includes you. Release the healing power within you and enjoy the quality of life you want for a lifetime.

Why Stress Affects Everyone Differently

December 4, 2018 by admin Leave a Comment

It is well documented that high levels of stress can contribute to heart disease, cancer, headaches, ulcers, digestive disturbances, backaches and nearly every other condition known to mankind. How can one word cause so many unique and different problems in different people especially since the stress reaction is the same for everyone? The answer may be simpler than you think.

Stress is a nervous system reaction that causes your heart to beat faster, your muscles to be tense, your stomach to tighten, and your hair follicles to stand up, all as a way to prepare your body for an emergency. When you interpret a situation as stressful, whether it truly is or not, your brain triggers this reaction by sending a signal over your spinal cord and nervous system to every cell of your body. In prehistoric times, this would have been the perfect reaction to escape from a hungry dinosaur, but in today’s stress filled world and no Tyrannosaurus Rex, this chronic reaction can cause pain, sickness and disease.

Where your body breaks down from stress may depend on whether or not you have a condition known as vertebral subluxation. A vertebral subluxation is a spinal injury that interferes with the normal function of your nervous system which can affect your health on every level whether you have symptoms or not. If you have this in your spine, your body is already pre-stressed.

Many people deal with stress through deep breathing, meditation, exercise and healthy food choices. These are all very good things to do as part of your lifestyle to counter balance stress, but if your nervous system is pre-stressed, the slightest deviation from the perfect stress management plan can send you into a frustrating, uncomfortable, or painful tailspin. Removing this pre-stress causing subluxation can improve your resistance to daily stressors dramatically.

Research shows that it only takes the weight of a dime to reduce nerve transmission. Additional research has found that nerve compression can exist without pain and can cause deterioration within two weeks.

In this pre-stressed condition, your body becomes more vulnerable to outside stresses while other people may be much more resistant. The location of the subluxation can determine what types of symptoms, if any, you experience. For example, someone with nerve interference in the upper part of the neck might feel headaches, have allergies, or a stiff neck. Because the nerves fibers that come out of the upper neck also go to the entire body, pressure here can literally cause or mimic nearly every symptom or disease you can name.

Interference to the nerve supply in the lower back can cause a backache, leg problems and also affect ovary, prostate, bladder or bowel function. Interference to the nerves in the middle of your back can affect your heart and lungs or cause tension, stomach problems, digestive disturbances and discomfort.

The scary part is that like most serious conditions, vertebral subluxations can cause stress for decades without any symptoms. This is when serious problems occur, many of which could have been avoided by eliminating this pre-stressed condition right away. The birth process, childhood falls, sports injuries and poor lifestyle habits are just a few causes of subluxations. Rather than getting to the cause and removing this underlying problem, many people attempt to chase their symptoms away with drugs, or another type of quick fix, and then wonder why their condition returns. Removing the cause and optimizing the function of your nervous system is a better immediate and long-term plan.

Regardless or your symptoms, a chiropractic examination can locate pre-stressed areas in your spine that may be affecting your health on every level.

Crisis care is one way to deal with stress, only receiving care when you are hurt. A much better option is to remove the subluxation, stress, from your body and keep it out as a part of your lifestyle. This will help you to stress less, live more, and enjoy the quality of life you deserve.
